Chapter 5 Connected Educator

Social book marking is very beneficial in order to keep track of the websites you are using.  This is a strategy that can be used to stay organized which is great for event planners.  Bookmarks can also be shared between people within your network which is great for collaboration between employees, clients, etc.  Some websites that are mentioned in the connected educator are Delicious and Diigo, which allow you to bookmark websites etc.

Blogs are a great way to connect and collaborate with other people in all areas of careers and life.  As an event planner it would be beneficial to read blogs to stay up to date on current trends, new information about the hospitality industry, and expressing new ideas.  It also might be an option for an event planner to create a blog to show customers previous events that might have happened.  This is a great marketing strategy, especially for weddings.  Podcasts are also a great way to learn through listening to people talk on recordings or audio files.  Podcasts have multiple episodes and topics can be about anything.  Downloading podcasts to your computer is an option.  Another option could be using an mp3 player to listen, your phone, tablet, etc.

A great tool that can be used to find blog posts that are specific to event planning is to use a RSS Reader.  This would save a lot of time if you are looking for specific information, an RSS Reader will scan newspapers, magazines, blogs, etc. with key words.  Event planners generally do not have a lot of time to do research because they are so busy with planning events.  This tool would help tremendously with time management.  Google Reader is a blog reader that can be used to subscribe to the RSS feed of blogs that are good resources.  This can be done by going to the website, bloglines, and creating an account subscription.

Wikis are great for collaboration and working in groups.  You can share different things such as links, pictures, videos and files through wiki.  Different groups can edit the wiki together, etc.  As an event planner, this concept may be beneficial to have between all of the vendors involved within an event.  Vendors could include catering, entertainment, florists, etc.  This may help to ensure that everyone is on the same page about an event.  This also may be useful for an event planner to set up with clients, where pictures and videos can be shared after the event has taken place.

A question for the readers, do you currently use any of these collaborative tools as a student or for your profession?  Which do you find to be the most useful?

  1. All of these tools are effective for growing a personal business and showing potential clients the work you have produced or are capable of. I believe the podcast industry still has plenty of room for expansion in almost every professional field. For an example I typed in "event planning" on Spotify and found 1 event planning podcast, which shows these professional tools are still growing. I believe podcasts are one of the best tools available; you can find knowledgeable people in almost every field producing podcasts. Do you think a podcast would help you in your career?

  2. Blogs are a great way to stay up to date with information in almost any field. Not only is the information related to the specific topic you're looking for, but it discusses the practices that are being used currently. The only down side I could see would be the validity and quality of the information being given. I think filtering information based on the author's current experience in the field would be the best way. What do you think the best way filter information would be?

  3. Cara,
When I was reading this chapter I became very interested in the social bookmarks that were mentioned. I can't even tell you how many times I found something cool on twitter or instagram and didn't save it, then later I try to find it and it's nowhere to be found. Everybody loves wiki, it may not be a reliable source to cite in an essay, but it definitely provides us with information that can help fill out the paper. Have you heard about social bookmarks before reading this chapter?
